PromQL engine: Delay deletion of __name__ label to the end of the query evaluation (#14477)
PromQL engine: Delay deletion of __name__ label to the end of the query evaluation

  - This change allows optionally preserving the `__name__` label via the `label_replace` and `label_join` functions, and helps prevent the dreaded "vector cannot contain metrics with the same labelset" error.
  - The implementation extends the `Series` and `Sample` structs with a boolean flag indicating whether the `__name__` label should be deleted at the end of the query evaluation.
  - The `label_replace` and `label_join` functions can still access the value of the `__name__` label, even if it has been previously marked for deletion. If  `__name__` is used as target label, it won't be dropped at the end of the query evaluation.
  - Fixes https://github.com/prometheus/prometheus/issues/11397
  - See https://github.com/jcreixell/prometheus/pull/2 for previous discussion, including the decision to create this PR and benchmark it before considering other alternatives (like refactoring `labels.Labels`).
  - See https://github.com/jcreixell/prometheus/pull/1 for an alternative implementation using a special label instead of boolean flags.
  - Note: a feature flag  `promql-delayed-name-removal` has been added as it changes the behavior of some "weird" queries (see https://github.com/prometheus/prometheus/issues/11397#issuecomment-1451998792)

Example (this always fails, as `__name__` is being dropped by `count_over_time`):

Optimize histogram iterators (#13340)
Optimize histogram iterators

Histogram iterators allocate new objects in the AtHistogram and
AtFloatHistogram methods, which makes calculating rates over long
ranges expensive.

In #13215 we allowed an existing object to be reused
when converting an integer histogram to a float histogram. This commit follows
the same idea and allows injecting an existing object in the AtHistogram and
AtFloatHistogram methods. When the injected value is nil, iterators allocate
new histograms, otherwise they populate and return the injected object.

The commit also adds a CopyTo method to Histogram and FloatHistogram which
is used in the BufferedIterator to overwrite items in the ring instead of making
new copies.

Note that a specialized HPoint pool is needed for all of this to work 
(`matrixSelectorHPool`).

Add warnings (and annotations) to PromQL query results (#12152)
Return annotations (warnings and infos) from PromQL queries

This generalizes the warnings we have already used before (but only for problems with remote read) as "annotations".

Annotations can be warnings or infos (the latter could be false positives). We do not treat them different in the API for now and return them all as "warnings". It would be easy to distinguish them and return infos separately, should that appear useful in the future.

The new annotations are then used to create a lot of warnings or infos during PromQL evaluations. Partially these are things we have wanted for a long time (e.g. inform the user that they have applied `rate` to a metric that doesn't look like a counter), but the new native histograms have created even more needs for those annotations (e.g. if a query tries to aggregate float numbers with histograms).

The annotations added here are not yet complete. A prominent example would be a warning about a range too short for a rate calculation. But such a warnings is more tricky to create with good fidelity and we will tackle it later.

Another TODO is to take annotations into account when evaluating recording rules.

beorn7 c0879d64cf promql: Separate Point into FPoint and HPoint
In other words: Instead of having a “polymorphous” `Point` that can
either contain a float value or a histogram value, use an `FPoint` for
floats and an `HPoint` for histograms.

This seemingly small change has a _lot_ of repercussions throughout
the codebase.

The idea here is to avoid the increase in size of `Point` arrays that
happened after native histograms had been added.

The higher-level data structures (`Sample`, `Series`, etc.) are still
“polymorphous”. The same idea could be applied to them, but at each
step the trade-offs needed to be evaluated.

The idea with this change is to do the minimum necessary to get back
to pre-histogram performance for functions that do not touch
histograms. Here are comparisons for the `changes` function. The test
data doesn't include histograms yet. Ideally, there would be no change
in the benchmark result at all.

First runtime v2.39 compared to directly prior to this commit:

In summary, the runtime doesn't really improve with this change for
queries with just a few steps. For queries with many steps, this
commit essentially reinstates the old performance. This is good
because the many-step queries are the one that matter most (longest
absolute runtime).

In terms of allocations, though, this commit doesn't make a dent at
all (numbers not shown). The reason is that most of the allocations
happen in the sampleRingIterator (in the storage package), which has
to be addressed in a separate commit.

can be re-used to avoid allocating a new object.

beorn7 d16b314b72 Histogram: Do not render empty buckets in JSON output
While empty buckets can make sense in the internal representation (by
joining spans that would otherwise need more overhead for separate
representation), there are no spans in the JSON rendering. Therefore,
the JSON should not contain any empty buckets, since any buckets not
included in the output counts as empty anyway.

This changes both the inefficient MarshalJSON implementation as well
as the jsoniter implementation.

tsdb: Rework iterators (#9877)
- Pick At... method via return value of Next/Seek.
- Do not clobber returned buckets.
- Add partial FloatHistogram suppert.

Note that the promql package is now _only_ dealing with
FloatHistograms, following the idea that PromQL only knows float
values.

As a byproduct, I have removed the histogramSeries metric. In my
understanding, series can have both float and histogram samples, so
that metric doesn't make sense anymore.

As another byproduct, I have converged the sampleBuf and the
histogramSampleBuf in memSeries into one. The sample type stored in
the sampleBuf has been extended to also contain histograms even before
this commit.

JSON marshaling is only needed for the HTTP API. Since Point is such a
frequently marshaled type, it gets an optimized treatment directly in
web/api/v1/api.go. The MarshalJSON method still provided in the promql
package is therefore unused and its existence is confusing.

beorn7 7a8bb8222c Style cleanup of all the changes in sparsehistogram so far
A lot of this code was hacked together, literally during a
hackathon. This commit intends not to change the code substantially,
but just make the code obey the usual style practices.

A (possibly incomplete) list of areas:

* Generally address linter warnings.

* The `pgk` directory is deprecated as per dev-summit. No new packages should
  be added to it. I moved the new `pkg/histogram` package to `model`
  anticipating what's proposed in #9478.

* Make the naming of the Sparse Histogram more consistent. Including
  abbreviations, there were just too many names for it: SparseHistogram,
  Histogram, Histo, hist, his, shs, h. The idea is to call it "Histogram" in
  general. Only add "Sparse" if it is needed to avoid confusion with
  conventional Histograms (which is rare because the TSDB really has no notion
  of conventional Histograms). Use abbreviations only in local scope, and then
  really abbreviate (not just removing three out of seven letters like in
  "Histo"). This is in the spirit of
  https://github.com/golang/go/wiki/CodeReviewComments#variable-names

* Several other minor name changes.

* A lot of formatting of doc comments. For one, following
  https://github.com/golang/go/wiki/CodeReviewComments#comment-sentences
  , but also layout question, anticipating how things will look like
  when rendered by `godoc` (even where `godoc` doesn't render them
  right now because they are for unexported types or not a doc comment
  at all but just a normal code comment - consistency is queen!).

* Re-enabled `TestQueryLog` and `TestEndopints` (they pass now,
  leaving them disabled was presumably an oversight).

* Bucket iterator for histogram.Histogram is now created with a
  method.

* HistogramChunk.iterator now allows iterator recycling. (I think
  @dieterbe only commented it out because he was confused by the
  question in the comment.)

* HistogramAppender.Append panics now because we decided to treat
  staleness marker differently.

Bartlomiej Plotka 34426766d8 Unify Iterator interfaces. All point to storage now.
This is part of https://github.com/prometheus/prometheus/pull/5882 that can be done to simplify things.
All todos I added will be fixed in follow up PRs.

* querier.Querier, querier.Appender, querier.SeriesSet, and querier.Series interfaces merged
with storage interface.go. All imports that.
* querier.SeriesIterator replaced by chunkenc.Iterator
* Added chunkenc.Iterator.Seek method and tests for xor implementation (?)
* Since we properly handle SelectParams for Select methods I adjusted min max
based on that. This should help in terms of performance for queries with functions like offset.
* added Seek to deletedIterator and test.
* storage/tsdb was removed as it was only a unnecessary glue with incompatible structs.

No logic was changed, only different source of abstractions, so no need for benchmarks.
